Description: |
The Nickel District Conservation Authority (o/a Conservation Sudbury) is undertaking studies to update the floodplain mapping for the Whitson River and Whitewater Lake watersheds. The complete flood plain mapping for the Whitson River and Whitewater Lake watersheds was previously completed in 1979 and 1978 respectively, and is no longer accurate. Many changes have occurred including impacts from municipal drains in headwater areas. This study will address riverine flood risk and include updated topography, hydrology, hydraulics and mapping in consideration of changes to these two watersheds. Once completed this work will help manage the risks associated with new and existing development in or near floodplains. As the frequency and intensity of severe weather events continue to grow, establishing and maintaining accurate floodplain mapping is critical to public safety and to prevent property damages and business disruptions. Floodplain mapping allows municipalities and conservation authorities to help guide development away from flood-prone areas. It also supports better emergency management and planning to protect public safety and infrastructure. Such mapping will consider the impacts from climate change and will be welcomed by the City of Greater Sudbury that is currently experiencing development in these watersheds. The administration of the project will be provided by Conservation Sudbury with the services of a consulting engineer required to perform the technical work and mapping. |
